Evergreen, CO- July 2018 - If you or someone you know has ever lived through an emergency, you understand the importance of first responders. They are among the first people to arrive at emergencies, which include accidents, natural disasters, attacks, unexpected medical emergencies or even a citizen’s assist—which involves individual volunteers who help people in a variety of ways.
 
First responders include dispatchers, police officers, firefighters, paramedics, mountain rescue teams, volunteers and individuals within the community who are trained in first aid and CPR. They can help with evacuations, rescue operations, providing food and water and much more. First responders also address medical emergencies until an ambulance should arrive.
 
A certified first responder (also called an emergency medical responder, emergency first responder, medical first responder, or first responder) is someone who has completed a course and received certification in providing pre-hospital care for medical emergencies. The first responder level of emergency medical training is also often required for police officers, rescue squads and search and rescue personnel.
 
Many first responders have location-specific training such as swift water or mountain rescue, vehicle extrication or confined space rescue and hazmat operations.  Responders are often required to take advanced courses to achieve certification.
 
Certified individuals often receive many more hours of instruction than the individual trained in basic first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). However, they are not necessarily a substitute for more advanced emergency medical care rendered by emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and paramedics. First responders typically provide advanced first aid level care, CPR, and automated external defibrillator (AED) usage.
 
The term "certified first responder" is not to be confused with "first responder", which is a generic term referring to the first medically trained responder to arrive on scene. Advanced medical care is typically provided by EMS, although some police officers and firefighters also train to become emergency medical technicians or paramedics.
 
Elk Run Assisted Living’s residents and employees want to say a BIG ”thank you” to our mountain community’s first responders for the difficult job they do every day by putting their lives on the line to protect and enhance our community and way of life.
 
On Wednesday, September 19, Elk Run Assisted Living will honor, celebrate and support first responders with an appreciation breakfast from 7:30 a.m. through 9:30 a.m. If you are a first responder in our mountain community, you are invited to join us at 31383 Frost Way in Evergreen, Colorado.

The breakfast will allow us to honor those who give so much of themselves every day. We know you’re out there, because we hear so many stories in our community about the help people receive every day!
